Employer Sponsored Visas

Employer Sponsored Visas

Employer sponsored visas are available across several subclasses, each with its own set of requirements. Depending on the visa type, employers will need to hold either a Standard Business Sponsorship or a Temporary Activities Sponsorship — both of which are typically valid for five years and can be used to nominate multiple employees throughout that period.

We can help you with the most up-to-date and detailed guidance for your specific case.

Each visa subclass has a defined list of eligible occupations. For the Subclass 482 and 186 visas, eligible roles are drawn from the Core Skills Occupation List, as set out in the relevant Home Affairs legislative instrument. Some occupations carry additional caveats, so it’s important to check the specific conditions that apply to your role. Salary requirements also apply across all employer sponsored visas — the market wage rate must be paid in most cases, with the exception of the Training visa, where the applicable award wage is accepted.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Common Questions To Employer Sponsored Visas

Considering whether an Employer Sponsored Visa is right for you can be a daunting task.  Here are some of the more common questions we get asked.

What are the prerequisites for an Employer Sponsored Visa?
There are two main visa pathways — the Subclass 482 and the Subclass 186.
To qualify, you generally need:
• A job offers from an Australian employer willing to sponsor you
• At least 1–2 years of relevant work experience. This also depends on your qualification.
• Your occupation must appear on Australia's skilled occupation list
• A salary offers at the minimum threshold wage for this visa. There is some flexibility.
• English proficiency (typically IELTS 6.0 or equivalent)
• Medicals + police check
• A skills assessment may be required depending on your occupation
The employer must also be an approved sponsor and prove they couldn't find a suitable local candidate first.
How difficult is the process for Employer Sponsorship?
It's moderately complex. There are three separate stages — the employer gets approved as a sponsor, then nominates the specific role, then you apply for the visa itself. Each stage has its own forms, fees, and criteria.
The main challenges are the labour market testing requirement (the employer must advertise the role first), strict salary and compliance rules, and documentation that must be thorough and accurate. Processing varies depending on the occupation. That said, thousands of these visas are granted every year, and with good preparation it's very achievable.
