Citizenship Pathways

There are several ways to become an Australian citizen, but the most common are:

1 .Citizenship By Birth

If you were born in Australia and at least one of your parents was an Australian citizen or permanent resident at the time of your birth.

2 .Citizenship By Descent

If you were born outside Australia and one of your parents was an Australian citizen at the time of your birth

3. Citizenship Conferral

This is the most common way for people who were not born in Australia to become citizens. Generally, you must:
Be a permanent resident of Australia.
Meet certain residence requirements.
Be of good character.
Pass a citizenship test (unless exempt).
Intend to reside in Australia or maintain a close and continuing association with Australia.

4. New Zealand Residents Holding a Special Category Visa

If you hold this visa, you can apply directly for citizenship, without necessarily needing to apply for permanent residency first. For citizenship purposes, time held on an SCV is now considered towards meeting the residence requirements It's important to note that New Zealand citizens still need to meet the other requirements for Australian citizenship, such as:
Meeting the residence requirements.
Be of good character.
Pass a citizenship test (unless exempt).
Intend to reside in Australia or maintain a close and continuing association with Australia.
These measures acknowledge the close ties between Australia and New Zealand and streamline the process for eligible New Zealand citizens to become Australian citizens.
